LAB POLICIES & PHILOSOPHY
inclusivity statement:
In this group, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, ability, or background, are welcomed and respected. We believe that our different perspectives makes us stronger and enriches our work. We strive to create a space where everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives. We carry this commitment in our research, public outreach, and our service to our professional and academic communities.
MENTORING PHILOSOPHY:
In the Szczepanski Lab, we use a goal-based mentorship approach. Our lab activities (group meetings, check-ins) are organized so both short- and long-term goals are regularly assessed, and members are receiving regular feedback from their mentors and fellow team members:
Annual goals are discussed and reviewed at the annual State of the Lab presentation (early September).
Semester goals are discussed and reviewed at the start of each term (Fall, Spring, Summer). Each team member puts together a strategic plan at the start of the term outlining their major goals, associated sub-tasks, and proposing a schedule to meet their goals.
Weekly goals are discussed at check-ins that take place three times per week (~15 minutes).
LAB Policies, Resources & Useful Links:
Lab Expectations - Prior to starting a research appointment, all team members are provided a lab expectations document. This document is updated frequently - please contact Caroline to request a copy.
Travel Policies - Please consult this document prior to planning conference travel. Additionally, all potential conference submissions (abstracts) should be discussed with Caroline at least 2 weeks prior to the submission deadline.
MSU Chemical Hygiene Plan - The majority of our safety practices and policies are covered in this document (material storage, hazardous waste disposal). The MSU Environmental Health & Safety Department website is also a good resource on required safety trainings and best practices for a safe laboratory environment.
